NEW PORT RICHEY - The state Department of Environmental Protection has
named Toby Brewer as its Jim Stevenson Resource Manager of the Year for
his work expanding programs at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park in
west Pasco County.
Brewer, who has worked for the state park service for 30 years, was
honored by Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet at a meeting Tuesday
in Tallahassee and again at Wednesday's county commission meeting in New
Port Richey.
The award is among the state's highest environmental honors, according
to DEP.
Brewer, who became the first park manager for Werner-Boyce in 2004, was
recognized for creating a database for mapping seagrass, for establishing
gopher tortoise habitat, and for helping to identify sinkholes and
underwater caves at the park in Port Richey.
Brewer also has worked with the school district to educate students
about their local natural resources and to remove shoreline debris.
The Jim Stevenson award recipient is selected by a committee that
includes members of the Sierra Club, the Florida Audubon Society and The
Nature Conservancy, according to the Department of Environmental
Protection.
